Horse starting FAQ

How long will it take?
On average, with no unforeseen complications, it takes 5-6 weeks to start a horse. The actual length of time depends on how much (if any) handling the horse has had prior to being started and how well the horse adjusts to being started.

How much does it cost?
We cannot offer a fixed price as the actual fee depends on what you want your horse to do and how long it takes your horse to learn what it needs to know before returning home. Our fee includes breaking/starting, full board for the horse, having feet done (including an introduction to being shod), floating, outings to a competition environment (if you are intending to compete the horse later).

What method do you use?
Our program is completely tailored to the individual horse. Our methods therefore vary according to the horse’s needs.

Do you provide progress reports?
Yes. John contacts clients each week to report on the horse’s progress. At the end of the starting process each client receives a written “Horse Report” outlining the horse’s progress, and including guidelines to continue the smooth training of the horse once it is at home.

Do you provide ongoing support in case of difficulties?
Yes. All of our clients receive ongoing support as required. This can include visits to the client’s premises in the advent of any problems.

In addition, we encourage all clients to come to our premises for at least 3 rides before taking a horse home. These rides can include riding at other venues to ensure that the rider can handle the horse in an environment that is new to the horse.
